Registration with the NMC
Everything you need to know about registration as a nurse in the UK
Once you have qualified as a first level, registered nurse, you will need to obtain registration to allow you to practice nursing in the UK. Registration is carried out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
All nurses working in the UK, including those trained abroad, need to be registered with the NMC in order to practice. If you have trained overseas and now wish to practice in the UK you must apply for registration with the NMC.
Health Professionals recommends that you contact the NMC as soon as possible to get process underway.
Each application is assessed on an individual basis, taking into account both education, and experience gained as a nurse. The NMC application process can be a little daunting, but Health Professionals will support you throughout your application and make it as easy as possible.
The NMC asks that all nurses new to the UK, undergo the Overseas Nurses Programme (ONP). Every overseas applicant (outside the EEU and EEA) will have to sit a language test at a higher standard than is currently required. You will then have to complete a minimum 20-day training programme, which will address subjects such as UK law, health and safety issues, record-keeping, drugs administration and the code of professional conduct.
Health Professionals may be able to help you with the cost of this programme. Most nurses agencies offer to pay the full cost (an average of £300) but then require you to commit to them for a full year.

Health Professionals will monitor the progress of applications on a daily basis, thus greatly speeding up the process.
The agency has now also have a direct database link to the NMC database so can check applications live on the NMC system.

It can be difficult to secure a date for examination so best to contact the ELTS office and inquire about application process as early as possible to ensure this does not delay your application process with the NMC as this is a requirement for the ONP and thus will not be processed until completed (additional cost of £110 to sit examination)
